MYTH: It’s dangerous.
ketosis causes ketoacidosis and can lead to death
Ketosis and ketoacidosis are synonymous.
They are not the same. “ketosis is a process whereby the body uses fat as the main source of energy instead of carbohydrate. This occurs when there isn’t enough carbohydrates to use as energy causing a break down of stored fat in your body”.
Ketoacidiosis is when the blood becomes too acidic and affects organ functions. This typically occurs with diabetics Type 1 patients.
MYTH:Too much fat.
Your meal does not have to swim in fat to lose weight
On a keto diet most of your calories should come from fat.
A Ketogenic diet is a high fat, low carbohydrate and adequate protein diet that produces ketones by breaking down fats from that are used as energy.
Adding too many oils in meals will affect your weight loss journey. You can get fats from nuts, seeds, eggs, turkey avocados etc in moderation.
MYTH: Extremely high in protein
Keto diet isn't just protein
Whilst on a keto diet, 75% of your calories should come from fat sources, 5% from carbohydrates, and 20% from protein.
The required daily intake suggests adults receive 10-35% from protein, and as such a high protein diet diet would mean going above the required intake.
These commonly shared myths, including many others, have discouraged some from starting / restarting this lifestyle or believing it is sustainable (when they stop seeing results).
